(Guadalajara) Quebecer Leylah Fernandez advanced to the next round by eliminating Belgian Elise Mertens, 13th seed, at the Guadalajara Open.

Fernandez defeated Mertens in two sets of 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday during this WTA 1000 caliber tournament. She will now meet the winner of the duel between the American Madison Keys and her compatriot Emma Navarro.

Both players had three aces during the one-hour, 34-minute clash. Mertens committed eight double faults compared to five for Fernandez.

Fernandez saved four of the 11 break points she faced. His opponent saved two on six occasions.

After a two-hour break, Fernandez returned to the court to play women’s doubles. She and her partner Taylor Townsend beat the American Peyton Stearns and the Tunisian Ons Jabeur in two sets of 6-4, 6-4.

Also in doubles on Tuesday, Quebecer Eugenie Bouchard and her Mexican partner Maria Fernanda Navarro Olivia lost 4-6, 6-7 (6) against Slovakian Tereza Mihalikova and Chinese Xu Yifan.

Later in the evening, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and her teammate, New Zealander Erin Routliffe, defeated Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus and Ukrainian Lyudmyla Kichenok 6-3, 4-6, 11-9.
