The 3 of July of 2020 will no doubt be a historic day for the Royal Nautical Club of Valencia, as this is the first time your regatta flagship, the Trofeo SM La Reina, not celebrated. The uncertainty of that could go to equipment and boats of other provinces, autonomous regions or even other countries to compete in valencian waters, united to the impossibility of hosting social events in the land due to the health crisis, led to the club valencia to cancel that, historically, has been its most important test, and one of the most prominent on the national scene.

This is the first time that it cancels the event in its 33 year history – the last 22 with the name of hm The Queen, which will remain as edition XXII the coming year, and will be held from 1 to July 4, 2021.

Since 1988, paying tribute to the Spanish Armada

The Trofeo SM La Reina was established in 1988 as a Trophy, the Admiral Marcial Sanchez – Barcáiztegui, with the goal that Valencia had a race relevant within the Cruiser class and that in addition, to pay tribute to the Spanish Navy did also the illustrious marine, one of the main drivers of sailing in Spain. S. M. The King has accepted the presidency of the Trophy in the year 1989, the year in which the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation will also gave the consideration of Race at a High Level.

In 1992, the regatta will set your celebration date in July, and in 1998 SM The Queen accepts the request of the club and of the Spanish Navy to incorporate their name to the Trophy, which, from 1999, happens to be I Trofeo SM La Reina – Regata Homenaje a la Armada Española – XII Copa Almirante Sánchez – Barcáiztegui.

With the new name, starts a spectacular growth of the regatta in terms of quality and participation national and international levels, marked by their name of the Trophy, the quality of the evidence, the grand race course of the city of Valencia, and the presence of the Royal Family. Throughout its editions, the test has been scoring for the Spanish Championship, Spanish Cup, International Regatta, Rolex Cup or European Championship ORC, among others, becoming at the same time in a large social event in the city with the collaboration of great companies in the sector, luxury and lifestyle.

The protagonists, about the race:

Alejandro Fliquete, president of the RCN Valencia sailing: “The Trofeo SM La Reina is “the great feast” of the RCN Valencia, where we have the honor of counting with the presence of the Royal House and of the Navy, and in bringing together the best sailors at the international level; logically, it is a great event for the city. Add to this that we have a great field of racing, as demonstrated at the Copa America and the best facilities of our club; the result is a great spectacle both on the sea as on land. I have the honour to be president of this great club and the lucky sailor; the decision not to celebrate this important sporting event and social for me has been tough. But it could not be other -given the situation caused by the pandemic – as the priority is to ensure the safety of all participants, partners and event attendees; we resarciremos the next year.”

Rafael Chirivella, director of the Trofeo SM La Reina: “Who we going to tell the 22 of January to our Commodore of the regatta, Jaime Rodriguez-Toubes, our councillor of Sports of the city Council of Valencia, Pilar Bernabé, our president Alexander Fliquete and myself that we were presenting at Fitur in the pavilions Ifema two of the biggest events to be held in this year 2020 in our club that just two months later, when the pandemic took control of Ifema and of the lives of many people, that everything else would pass to a second plane. Only the international regatta Optiorange saved by the bell, also with a note and without any incident. But the world does not, with the illusion and the strength of the Real Club Náutico de Valencia we maintain the XXXIII edition of the Cup Marcial Sanchez-Barcáiztegui – XXII Trofeo S. M. La Reina to 2021, as if from a bad dream they were. And this parenthesis temporary stay for the history of our race as a small sacrifice in honor of all those who have helped to pass this bad journey and a reminder to those who have not been able to resist the temporary. The Casa Real, The Spanish Navy and the Royal Yacht Club I expect from 1 to 4 July 2021 in the field of regattas Manel Casanova, that what is promised is debt”.

Admiral Jaime Rodriguez – Toubes, the commodore of the Trofeo SM La Reina and the delegate of the sailing of the Spanish Armada: “Sad because not able to celebrate this year’s regatta SM Queen but happy because next year is going to take even more strength. It gives Me personally a lot of shame not to be able to be in Valencia and to receive as always the cariniño and the professionalism of the club. But I think in the next year, and I think that this is a small bump that we will all have to overcome. A hug to everyone”.

Pedro Sardina, a journalist who has been covering every one of the editions of the race:

“I Am sure that the race course Manel Casanova will cry of shame when you see that there is full of candles at the end of this week. The Trophy of the Queen has always been the starting point of the major regattas in Spain and, unfortunately, this year leaves us orphans. We will work hard so that in 2021 we return to this great void that we have now”
