(Prague) Yanina Wickmayer came from behind to upset second seed Zhu Lin 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the Prague Open on Tuesday.
It was the Belgian’s first victory against a world top-50 opponent since 2017. It comes after Wickmayer reached the semi-finals of the Polish Open.
In another surprising result, Yuan Yue advanced to the second round by knocking out third seed Zhang Shuai in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.
Linda Noskova (no. 4) had no trouble showing American Elvina Kalieva the way out by winning 6-1, 6-2.
China’s Xiyu Wang (no. 9) beat Denmark’s Clara Tauson 6-3, 6-2.
Jule Niemeier, Kaia Kanepi, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, Tereza Martincova and Emiliana Arango also managed to secure their second-round bye.
