Canada Soccer | No new head coach before appointment of general secretary

Mauro Biello can take a breather. His position as interim head coach of the Canadian men’s soccer team will not be in danger for a few more months.

Canada Soccer announced Wednesday that the search for a new head coach will not take place until the position of general secretary of the organization is filled. The organization speaks of a nomination “by the end of the year”.

Jason DeVos, a former Canadian international, currently holds this job, also on an interim basis. The international organizational consultancy company Korn Ferry has been chosen to lead the search process for the future holder of the most important operational position in the federation.

In a statement Wednesday, Canada Soccer said “Mauro Biello will remain the team’s interim head coach until a new permanent coach is hired.” It is not specified whether Mauro Biello is, per se, a candidate for this position.

Biello has yet to be on the touchline as coach for Canada – the federation did not have the resources to organize friendly matches during the last international break. He will lead his first match as head coach on October 13, against Japan.

The former Impact head coach has been at the helm of the Canadian team since the departure of John Herdman for Toronto FC last August. Canada Soccer notes that it has spent the last few weeks “filling positions within its coaching staff and “making contact with players on the men’s national team.”

“This is the opportunity of a lifetime,” Biello said in the press release. I thank Jason and the entire Canada Soccer Board of Directors for their support and trust. I am truly honored to be able to take on this coaching role as our men’s program begins an important qualifying period for the 2024 Copa América.”

This organizational update from Canada Soccer also confirmed that Paulo Senra has officially been hired as Head of Communications and Content. Senra previously worked for sports streaming channel DAZN, the CFL and the Canadian Olympic Committee.
