(Pittsburgh) Andrew McCutchen’s remarkable season is over.

The Pittsburgh Pirates’ hitter of choice will be on the 10-day injured list after partially tearing the Achilles tendon in his left foot as he came around on a double in the win against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night.

The 36-year-old veteran initially said he felt “fine”, but further examinations by Pirates medical staff revealed the tear. Director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk mentioned Wednesday that McCutchen will have to wear a protective boot for six weeks, and said he had not discussed the possibility of surgery with the player.

McCutchen is batting .256 with 12 home runs and 43 RBIs this season. He had his 2,000th career hit in June and was just one long ball away from the 300 career mark when he was injured Monday night.

McCutchen has appeared in five career All-Star Games and was the National League MVP in 2013, while playing for the Pirates from 2009 to 2017. He could become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the campaign . However, he has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain in Pittsburgh for the rest of his career.
