On Wednesday April 12, 2023, the Senate adopted by a large majority the government bill for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (JOP). This law aims to ensure the safety of visitors during the 2024 JOP while streamlining the controls at the entrance to sports venues.
On Vie-Publique, the State presents the new measures as essential in order “to avoid incidents like those which took place at the Stade de France during the Champions League final in May 2022.” However, this Monday, April 17, the deputies La France insoumise (LFI) and Europe Écologie-Les Verts (EELV) filed an appeal before the Constitutional Council.
Elected officials LFI and EELV denounce a law “manifestly contrary to several principles of constitutional value”. They ask for the censorship of the “liberticide and security” text since they believe that it “infringes several principles of constitutional value”, such as “respect for private life” or even “the principle of safeguarding the dignity of the person”, reports France-Info.
“In an exceptional event, exceptional measures!” Declared, according to Le Monde, the draftsman on behalf of the Social Affairs Committee, Christine Le Nabour, Renaissance MP. In the name of this “exception”, the government passed legislative “adjustments” deemed “essential” for hosting the JOP. Some opposition MPs are worried about an exceptional law that is about to become the norm.
