Supermarket: the Lidl anti-inflation basket that stands out

spot_img

For the past year, the price of food products has continued to rise, like electricity or fuel. The FranceInfo basket presented 37 products whose prices were observed over this period of inflation. The result is final. Daily foodstuffs, used by all French people, have increased considerably between February 2022 and February 2023. Thus, the kilogram of first-price sugar has increased by 54% over one year.

In the top 5 of product increases, we also find rice or the one-kilogram package of flour. This considerable increase has led to several strategies on the part of the government. An anti-inflation basket was to be installed in supermarkets at the request of Bruno Le Maire, Minister of the Economy.

Discussions between large retailers and their suppliers having failed, this basket has been removed. As a replacement, the Minister of Economy proposes an anti-inflation quarter. This quarter started on March 15, 2023 to limit price escalation on selected products. Lidl thus decides to participate, but by setting itself apart from its competitors. Unlike other brands that have offered a fixed product basket, the German brand stands out from the others by launching an anti-inflation basket that changes every week. Indeed, there are no fixed products for this basket, but a list of product types to be found each week. Indeed, on March 31, 2023, through a press release, Lidl announced the 15% reduction on selected products.

The basket will then consist of 25 daily products in total. You can find the contents of this basket every Wednesday on their Lidl Plus mobile application. The group insists on the fact that “the French recognize that the brand is the most effective bulwark against inflation and recommend it”. This weekly basket follows the line of the brand, according to the brand. Indeed, the objective is “to give consumers access to a wide choice of everyday products at the best price”.
