Inflation: the departments most affected by the rise in prices in 2023

On Friday March 31, INSEE unveiled the inflation figures. In slight decline compared to February, the month of March shows a general rise in prices of 5.6% over one year. Households are particularly affected by the rise in the cost of energy but also by that of food products. Prices rose by 15.8% on average in March in food departments.

And it’s not about to stop. According to Emmanuel Cannes, price and inflation expert at NielsenIQ, the end of double-digit inflation will only occur around mid-2023, at the time of summer. Until then, households are carefully watching their spending, waiting for a lull. What if one way to save money was to go shopping in the neighboring department?

According to franceinfo, from one department to another, inflation is not the same. Franceinfo and NielsenIQ, a company carrying out market research in the field of consumer goods, have classified the departments of France according to their price index.

And the least expensive department is that of Vendée. Households pay less for their shopping there than anywhere else in France. More generally, the trend is that the western departments are less affected by inflation than those in the east. For what ? According to Emmanuel Cannes, expert at NielsenIQ, “there are historical basins of stores in the west that have a rather aggressive policy.”

For franceinfo, the expert explains the price difference from one territory to another. In large cities, “stores have costs, in particular the rental of premises at least intramural, much higher than on the outskirts or certain departments. So the prices offered take into account all these charges linked to these structural costs. ents.” For the same reason, in mountainous regions the high transport costs are reflected in the prices in the shops.

What are the departments where inflation will remain high until this summer? Check it out in our slideshow below.
