Tax on household waste: the cities where we pay more

Increases that hide others. Many owners had a bad surprise when they received their property tax notice, noting an increase in the latter for the year 2022, on average by 3.4%. As Capital explains, this tax is not the only one to be on the rise since the household waste collection tax is also increasing this year. The reason ? “The 3.4% revaluation of the rental bases, but also the increase in the rates voted by the municipalities”, indicates the site. Residents of municipalities with 40,000 to 100,000 inhabitants are the worst off and face the largest increases.

As the Public Service website explains, “to finance the collection of household waste, you must pay, depending on your municipality, a tax or a fee for the removal of household waste”. The TEOM is annexed to the property tax and “its amount does not depend on the service rendered”, because “it also concerns owners who do not use it”, it is specified. If you pay the property tax, you therefore also – automatically – pay the household waste disposal tax. The only ones to escape are:

To understand the increase in the rate, you must already know how the TEOM is calculated each year. The Public Service website recalls that it is made “on the same basis as the property tax, that is to say half of the cadastral rental value of the property”: “The amount of the tax is equal to the basis used multiplied by the rate set by the community”. It is this rate that interests us more particularly, because it is this rate that many municipalities have decided to increase.

Capital took an interest in the evolution of the rate between the year 2021 and the year 2022 and the increases are particularly significant in 5 cities, which you can discover in the slideshow below. In a dozen other municipalities, the rate has not particularly increased, but local elected officials already apply the highest household waste taxes in the country. Here are which ones.
