End of account sharing: will you be able to watch Netflix on vacation?

Gradually, it will be less and less possible to share your Netflix account with other people. The American company wants to put an end to this practice which would hinder its “long-term ability to invest in [its] service and improve it”, as explained in a press release published last week. As tests currently being conducted in South America indicate, it will still be possible to watch Netflix from your vacation spot, albeit partially, reports Presse Citron.

Since last March, a test is indeed underway in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru regarding a supplement to add “an extra member”. Another test of what form account sharing billing will take will soon be launched in other countries on the continent. From August, subscribers in Argentina, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras will be able to pay 3 euros to add an additional household to their subscription, now restricted to a single location.

Regarding access to its account on a television during the holidays, the SVOD service also specified on a help page for Argentina that it will be possible to “watch Netflix on a television outside your home up to 2 weeks as long as your account has not previously been used there”. “This is authorized once per location and per year”, it is also specified.

At the same time, Netflix announced on July 19, 2022 that it had lost 970,000 subscribers between the end of March and the end of June. A limited drop, especially since the platform feared losing up to two million subscribers over the period after a first historic drop of 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter. The service now has 220.67 million paid subscriptions worldwide. A figure that Netflix hopes to see rise to 221.67 million in the third quarter.

To achieve its goal, the Californian company is counting on its next releases and popular series like Stranger Things, but also on the arrival by the end of the year of a low-cost subscription with advertising displays. These will be managed by Microsoft.
