66% for vegetable oils, 29.8% for sugar, 27.2% for cereals… The inflation figures worry the French, anxious to see the amount of their shopping cart increase at the supermarket. Faced with declining purchasing power, there are a few tricks to lighten an increasingly high bill.

As the war in Ukraine continues, the effects of inflation are shaking up a daily life already weakened by the recent health crisis. In early May, Claude Baland, the president of the Food Banks network, also sounded the alarm to France Info, fearing “serious consequences” on his organization.

It must be said that the price of certain consumer products has reached a record level in recent weeks with, in particular, an increase of 43.73% over one year for the simple example of first-price pasta. The cost of meat confirms this trend with an increase of 14% for minced steaks, just like oils (17.97%) or coffee (16.56%).

While all food categories are affected, the price of products jumped 2.89% in April according to the monthly report of the IRI Institute, which specializes in the study of consumption, and inflation is expected reach 5.4% in June. On our plates, rising prices are forcing us to rethink how we consume and look for ways to save money.

While some French people have decided to reduce their expenses by restricting their holiday, energy or leisure budget, others have chosen to apply new habits. Many consumers are thus betting on curbing food waste, while favoring homemade products. Praised during the 2008 crisis, this method has already proven itself and is also intended to be in line with current environmental issues. Find, in our slideshow, the 5 tips to pay less for food products.
