Ex-Hawai’i record-setting QB Colt Brennan dead at 37

Colt Brennan, who set numerous NCAA records as the quarterback of the University of Hawai’i, has died, his dad, Terry Brennan, told the Star Advertiser.

His dad said Colt Brennan was in his fifth month at a rehab facility in California when he was discovered unconscious. He died Monday at a hospital in Newport, California.

“He had been doing well, the spark was back in his own eyes, and that he was healthy and doing great, and it occurred,” Terry Brennan told the newspaper.

Terry Brennan said family was Colt’s side when he died.

Colt Brennan’s run of success from 2005 to 2007 helped place Hawai’i soccer on the map. He passed for at least 4,000 yards three times, such as for 5,549 in 2006. That season, he also set the single-season record for touchdown passes with 58. The album was surpassed by Joe Burrow during the 2019 season.

Brennan completed sixth in Heisman voting in 2006 and third in 2007. The 2007 team completed the regular season 12-0 and 10th in the Associated Press poll prior to losing to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

Brennan was taken in the sixth round of the 2008 draft by Washington, but injuries prevented him from enjoying his rookie year, and he had been released. He never played in the NFL.

A 2010 automobile crash left him with a traumatic brain injury, and that made it hard to continue his soccer career. He strove to grab in the USFL, Canadian Football League and Arena Football League but didn’t stick.

Brennan had a series of legal problems recently, including arrests for driving under the influence.

In 2020, he was arrested at a hotel for causing a disturbance while drunk. A couple of months later, he had been arrested at his home in Hawai’i for the following disturbance through which police said he was”extremely intoxicated.”
