(Arlington) The Washington Capitals have hired their new head coach, Spencer Carbery, vice president and general manager of the organization Brian MacLellan announced on Tuesday.

Carbery, 41, is back with the Feds organization after spending the past two seasons in an assistant coaching role with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Carbery was in charge of the Leafs’ power play and forwards.

“Spencer is one of the best young coaches in hockey, and he’s had success at every level he’s been through. We believe his leadership, communication skills, ability to develop players and knowledge of our organization will be tremendous assets to him as he embarks on the next chapter of his coaching career,” MacLellan said per way of press release.

The coach from Victoria, British Columbia, was also the head coach of the Capitals’ farm club, the Hershey Bears, for three seasons between 2018 and 2021. During this stay, he also oversaw the progression of select players who played for the Capitals in 2022-23, including Martin Fehervary, Aliaksei Protas, Connor McMichael, Alex Alexeyev, Beck Malenstyn, Lucas Johansen and Joe Snively.

Carbery also coached the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Junior Hockey League in 2016-17, and was an assistant coach with the Providence Bruins (AHL) in 2017-18.

The Capitals fired Peter Laviolette in April after they finished sixth in the Metropolitan Division and were dropped from the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Caps won the only Stanley Cup in their history in 2017-18.
