(Toronto) Anthony Santander hit a grand slam to put the game away for the Toronto Blue Jays, who lost 13-3 to the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday.

Blue Jays pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was back in action after Tommy John surgery.

“It was a mix of nervousness and excitement,” Ryu said through translator Jun Sung Park. Unfortunately, I didn’t play the way I wanted, but I was just happy to be back on the mound. »

Most of the time, recovering from this operation takes 18 months. However, Ryu was back in the Majors within 14 months.

“You just can’t ignore everything he did to get to where he is today,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. I’m happy for him that he’s back and that he can contribute. »

Gunnar Henderson finished the game with three hits on five official at-bats, including a homer. He drove in four runs for the Orioles (66-41), who won their third straight game.

Ryan Mountcastle hit two doubles for his team, Ryan McKenna hit a two-run single and Adley Rutschman added a run with his hit.

Rutschman and Mountcastle hit doubles one after another to open the game.

Kyle Bradish (7-6) struck out seven batters, giving up three runs on four hits in seven innings of work. In relief, Cionel Perez and Joey Krehbiel pitched scoreless innings.

Danny Jansen hit a two-run homer for the Blue Jays (59-49) and Brandon Belt also hit a long ball. The Blue Jays have lost three straight.

It was Jansen’s 15th home run of the season, tying his career-high set last year.

Ryu (0-1) allowed nine hits and walked one. He held the Orioles to four runs in just over five innings. It was a first start for Ryu in 2023, whose operation ended his season more than a year ago.

Trevor Richards, Genesis Cabrera, Nate Pearson and Jordan Hicks also pitched in the game for the Blue Jays. Cabrera, Pearson and Hicks conceded, collectively, the other nine points.

Ryu’s night ended when Henderson homered in the top of the sixth inning, putting his team back in front. It was the athlete’s 18th home run of the season.
