(Kingston) Stephen Eustaquio scored in the 85th minute and Canada beat Jamaica 2-1 in Saturday’s CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal match.

Jonathan David scored the other goal for Canada, which had not won in Jamaica for 35 years.

Shamar Nicholson tied the score for Jamaica in the 56th minute.

Richie Laryea set the stage for the key goal, showing his speed down the right flank before passing to Eustaquio in the penalty area. The Ontarian didn’t miss his chance.

Game 2 of the series is Tuesday at BMO Field in Toronto.

The winners will reach the CONCACAF Nations League final next March.

The winning nation will also get a ticket to the Copa America as a guest team, at the South American championship.

The last Canadian men’s victory in Jamaica was on April 5, 1988, a 4-0 victory.

In their last meeting, in March 2022, Canada beat Jamaica 4-0 in Toronto, thereby qualifying for the World Cup.

In addition, Canada Soccer reported that more than 35,000 tickets were sold for the December 5 women’s match against Australia in Vancouver.

This will be Christine Sinclair’s last match in international competition.
