Just For Laughs | The ironic cynicism of Noel Miller

Noel Miller is now more measured, but still just as cynical. A few years after his first stint on Just For Laughs, the humorist known for his endearing irony is ready to open up to the public and present an hour of content he is proud of.

The past few months have been busy and very satisfying for Noel Miller. Since January, he has taken to the stage all over the United States, but also in Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand for his Everything Is F tour.

Hailing from Toronto, he also played in his hometown last April. Montreal will be the second Canadian destination of his tour.

“It’s super exciting,” said the principal, reached from his home in California. “I’ve been working on this hour for a few years and I’m happy with the result. And several people have asked me to come to Montreal this year. It’s very cool to not only come to Montreal, but also to do it during JFL. »

Four years ago, Noel Miller was invited to this Montreal celebration of English humor to present a podcast with his co-host and very good friend, Cody Ko. At that time, his popularity was growing thanks to his capsules on YouTube .

He now presents himself as a solo artist, which is a game-changer. It’s as if his career was divided into three stages: three years of stand-up, followed by a few years of concentrating on the web, then, since 2021, a return to stand-up, this time towards a more human genre, where he can take more risks.

Noel’s passion for stand-up comedy began as a teenager, when he received recordings of American comedians Chris Rock and Dave Chapelle’s one-man shows, which he watched and studied “quite religiously. ” in her youth.

When asked to categorize his style, Noel Miller struggles to provide a set-in-stone answer. “I’m hesitant to go to final terms,” he reasons. I think everyone gets something different from what you do. »

One thing is certain, however: to see him on stage is to receive deadpan, ironic humor with a healthy dose of cynicism and a “playful acknowledgment of the gloominess of certain aspects of the life “.

During his performance, Noel Miller talks about the development of his career and discusses the strange places it has taken him…psychologically. Through stand-up and YouTube, the artist has also dabbled in music (first humorously and then a bit more seriously), streaming, podcasts and producing a short film. “It was a lot of creative exploration, but now my efforts are more focused. »

And even if he writes in a “tangible” way for a wider audience, those who know him well from consuming his web content, typically an 18-35 year old audience, will be entitled to references that they can naturally enjoy.

“My show gets a little more personal in the second half. I talk about my family in a way that I haven’t discussed publicly before. It’s kind of a fun way to get to know me without a filter. »

If the tour went well, it is the prospect of a possible one-man show that makes the comedian smile on the other side of the screen. Over the next few months, whoever calls himself a “workaholic” plans to go all out to find and compose new ideas.

This hour, which he probably plans to publish by the end of the year, should be sprinkled with recurring themes and callbacks, a common practice among the comedians of the 1990s and 2000s that he particularly likes.

Noel Miller is invested, motivated. But we can also detect a spark of apprehension when he tells us about this project.

“It can be love-hate, stand-up, but in all the things I’ve tried, it’s one that I have genuine love for. I can definitely see myself doing stand-up for a long time. »
