Jim Morrison: what does the singer’s French grave look like?

A rock legend gone too soon. This Thursday, December 8, 2022, Jim Morrison would have celebrated his 79th birthday today. Legendary leader of the American group The Doors, the singer remains an idol for all the fans who continue to honor his memory through the generations.

Suddenly disappeared at the age of 27, on July 3, 1971, the death of Jim Morrison still remains a great mystery. Found lifeless in the bathtub of his home in Paris where he had come to take refuge with his partner at the time, the American artist died of a heart attack. However, rumors claim that he died of an overdose in a club. But, no autopsy would have been carried out, making it possible to certify the real reasons for his death.

While the disappearance of Jim Morrison mourned the whole world, his funeral was celebrated in haste in a small committee at Père-Lachaise. According to the author Patrick Coutin, this decision would come from the French government which wanted to avoid the riots of the cemetery. “Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin died some time before, and there were many riots. The then Minister of the Interior, Raymond Marcellin, had no desire for further rock’n’roll demonstrations in the Paris”, he said according to RTL.

More than 50 years after his death, Jim Morrison is still popular with French and foreign fans who gather in front of his tomb in Père-Lachaise. If the latter meet every July 3 to honor his memory, it is also possible to visit the tomb of the “Lizard King” in a course dedicated to celebrities thanks to the guide-lecturer Bertrand Beyern, whom Planet had the opportunity to follow during a visit this fall at All Saints.

Buried in the heart of Père-Lachaise, one can discover flowers, candles and other unusual objects that adorn the monument dedicated to Jim Morrison. Finally, on the engraving of his epitaph, we can read the inscription in Greek “ΚΑΤΑ ΤΟΝ ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ ΕΑΥΤΟΥ”, translating “Faithful to his own demon”. Here is his grave in pictures in our slideshow.
