(New Delhi) The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) risks replicating the mistakes made by the tech industry at the start of the social media era, Microsoft President Brad Smith warned Friday during a a business forum in New Delhi.

The tech industry “had gotten a little too euphoric about all the good things social media was going to bring to the world — and there were a lot of them — without thinking about the risks,” Smith lamented at the occasion of the B20 (Business 20), which brings together private business players for three days, before the G20.

AI is causing growing concern around the world because this technology can be used for malicious purposes. Like with “deepfake” videos that make people say things they didn’t say.

Technology, which promises to revolutionize a wide range of professions, also instills fear among many workers that their jobs will change or disappear.

Artificial intelligence is more likely to create jobs than destroy them, but it will lead to potential changes in job quality, including work intensity and autonomy, according to a study released by the UN on Monday.

This study also underlines that the effects of this new technology vary considerably according to professions and areas, with women being more likely than men to see their work affected.

According to the president of Microsoft, the public wants to ensure “that this new technology will remain under human control”.
