The Canadian basketball team was named the team of the year according to The Canadian Press on Friday.

Led by NBA star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the Canadians won bronze at the World Cup, securing their first medal in their history at the event.

The country reached the podium by beating the United States after overtime in September. The result allowed Canada to qualify for the Paris Olympics next year.

The maple leaf now ranks sixth in FIBA.

“It reflects the commitment and excellence of our players,” said the general manager of the Canadian team, Rowan Barrett. It all starts with the players. They love their country and they want to give everything for their country. »

“Our entire staff is dedicated to helping players excel. I think the whole team will take a lot of pride from it. »

It was the first time Canada beat the Americans at the World Cup.

“It shows the seriousness of our intentions, that we have taken our place and that we can compete with the world elite,” added Barrett.

The brigade received 22 votes in a vote conducted among journalists and sports commentators across Canada.

Billie Jean King Cup champions, Canada’s women’s tennis team received 19 votes.

Victorious in the Gray Cup, the Montreal Alouettes followed by collecting seven votes.

In May, 14 players signed three-year commitments to the state basketball program. The group includes Gilgeous-Alexander and Montrealer Luguentz Dort, both of the Thunder, as well as RJ Barrett of the Knicks, Rowan’s son.

“Canada has some real stars now,” said Paul Chapman, managing editor with Postmedia. They are not just players with a limited role or having to bring energy as reserves. »

There was a change of coach during the summer. Nick Nurse left the position on June 27; he was replaced the next day by Jordi Fernandez.

At the World Cup, Canada notably beat France and reigning champions Spain, before losing to Serbia.

The country finished the tournament with a 6-2 record, including a loss to Brazil and the bronze medal victory.
