(Mexico City) The 2024 edition of the Acapulco Men’s Tennis Open is held in February-March in the famous seaside resort in southwest Mexico destroyed by a hurricane of maximum force 5 on October 25, the organizing committee.

“With great enthusiasm and optimism, we are pleased to announce that the Mexican Open will take place in Acapulco, from February 24 to March 2, 2024,” said in a press release the organizing committee of the tournament won in 2023 by the Australian Alex de Minaur, who succeeded the Spaniard Rafael Nadal.

By maintaining the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco “we not only support tennis, but we also generate a positive impact on the local economy” by bringing “vitality to sectors such as tourism, transport, gastronomy and ‘hotel “.

The announcement comes less than two months after Hurricane Otis, which killed around fifty people and destroyed all the buildings and hotels on the waterfront, with winds blowing at more than 250 km/h.

The tournament will take place at the GNP Arena, surrounded by debris after the hurricane. Also affected, the Princess Mundo Imperial hotel with its 700 rooms will be available to participants from February 1, according to tournament organizers.

For the 2024 edition, the organization announces four players ranked among the 10 best in the world: the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (6), the German Alexander Zverev (7), the Dane Holger Rune (8) and the American Taylor Fritz ( 10). The Norwegian Casper Ruud (11) is also announced.

After a few years in Mexico, Acapulco has been the host since 1993 of the ATP circuit tournament in Mexico.

The Austrian Thomas Muster and the Spaniards David Ferrer and Rafael Nadal have each won the tournament four times.
