The Woman in Me | A taste of Britney Spears’ memoir

Pregnant with Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears underwent an abortion in the early 2000s. The singer had never spoken publicly about this “agonizing” moment. She does so in her memoir, The Woman in Me, in bookstores next Tuesday.

In an excerpt accessed by People magazine, Britney Spears indicates that this pregnancy was a surprise, but “not a tragedy”. “I loved Justin so much. I always believed we would have a family one day. […] Justin was definitely not happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young,” she wrote.

Of her abortion, she continues: “I don’t know if it was the right decision. If it had been just me, I never would have done it. But Justin was so convinced he didn’t want to be a father. »

People magazine, which will dedicate the cover of its next issue to Britney Spears, has revealed other extracts from the singer’s highly anticipated memoir.

In one passage, she returns in particular to the moment when, in 2007, she completely shaved her hair. Britney Spears indicates that if she took this action, it was her way of rebelling against the control that was imposed on her even before her guardianship in 2008.

“Growing up, I was scrutinized so much. People looked at me up and down. People have been telling me what they think about my body since I was a teenager. […] Shaving my head and taking action were my means of response,” she wrote in her memoirs.

She also reflects on her years under the tutelage of her father, Jamie Spears, describing them as “thirteen years of feeling like a shadow of [her] former self.”

“When I think that my father and his associates had control of my body and my money for so long, I feel bad… Think about how many male artists gambled away all their money, how many had substance abuse or mental health problems. No one tried to take away their control over their bodies and their money. I didn’t deserve what my family did to me,” she continues in another excerpt.

Remember that after a long, highly publicized legal saga, the guardianship measure over Britney Spears was lifted in November 2021.
