(Toronto) Danny Jansen scored three points as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Washington Nationals 6-3 on Monday.

Jansen hit a solo homer in the third, getting his 16th homer in 2023. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had hit a two-run double an inning earlier.

Eight of Toronto’s nine starters lodged the ball safely.

Although the opponent is going through a difficult season (61-71), Jansen pointed out that every victory is important.

“We know it’s not easy to win,” the receiver said. It’s not easy against anyone. Our goal is to win every game. »

Kevin Gausman (10-8) gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings. He had seven strikeouts, including his 200th of the season.

Two relievers linked to Jordan Hicks, author of a 12th save.

The Jays remain two and a half games from the last available playoff spot in the American.

Washington struck early: Gausman’s first-ever shot became a single by CJ Abrams, who then stole second base. He crossed the plate one out later, using a single from Joey Meneses.

George Springer tied the game 1-1 with a single before Guerrero’s 26th double of the season. Davis Schneider completed the push later in second with a single, producing his 12th run in 12 major league games.

“It’s great to see everyone contributing,” Jansen said. We need to work like that. »

The match was presented in front of 27,940 spectators.

Josiah Gray (7-11) allowed four runs, four hits and four walks, being chased after two innings.

“His mechanics just didn’t seem right,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. When he missed the target, it was by a good margin. »

Earlier Monday, the Blue Jays placed third baseman Matt Chapman on the 10-day disabled list with a sprained middle finger in his right hand.

Infielder Ernie Clement was recalled from Buffalo’s AAA-level farm; he was playing shortstop against the Nationals.

Having a .248 batting average this season, with 15 home runs and 50 RBIs, Chapman was plagued with finger discomfort several times in August.

He left Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Guardians after the sixth inning when his finger became swollen. The Guardians won the game 10-7, in 11 innings.

In 69 games this year with the Buffalo Bisons, Clement is batting .339 with 11 homers and 55 RBIs.
