Sound radars: why your car could be flashed

If you live in the capital, you have surely already come across a sound radar. In the middle of an experimental phase in Paris, these radars will soon be installed in the noisiest streets of the city.

With the main objective of detecting and subsequently verbalizing the loudest vehicles, these new radars could well end up being set up throughout the country and make the daily lives of local residents quieter and less noisy. In any case, this is the objective that the City of Paris has set, which will begin to verbalize the owners of vehicles detected by radar in 2024.

It was during this spring that these sound radars should have been set up in Paris. However, the installation of this device is experiencing delays in view of the devices still under study in the laboratories. Lucille Pinel, director of the MicrodB company, explains to our colleagues from Parisian that “these are the first sound radars in the world, so the test and certification phase necessarily takes time”.

Nevertheless, two of these radars had already been tested in the streets of Paris in 2022. But it will therefore be necessary to wait until 2024 before seeing them again on our streets. As for the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion, it specifies that “the devices used during the first phase are currently carrying out a panel of tests to determine whether they can be approved”.

Thanks to the first tests carried out by sound radars, we can conclude that some vehicles emit much more noise pollution than others. This is the case of two-wheelers and vehicles equipped with sirens (police car, ambulances…). Lucille Pinel affirms to colleagues that what is most disturbing in terms of noise, “is the 1% of vehicles that exceed the usual threshold”, which includes these vehicles.

This speed camera system could, if approved, be increasingly present in Pairs. The mayor of the 20th arrondissement of Paris, Éric Pliez, has also indicated that today, “if we were to add sound radars, I would suggest the Porte de Bagnolet where there is a lot of traffic, and the rue de Belleville which is a transit axis”, as Capital reports. But for now, it will still be necessary to wait until 2024 before crossing one of these radars.
