Boards of Directors | Efforts are recommended to improve Indigenous representation

(Toronto) A group of Indigenous women in business says much more needs to be done to improve Indigenous representation on corporate boards and in the business community.

Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) President and CEO Tabatha Bull says boards should broaden their criteria for selecting new members.

According to her, indigenous people are often excluded because they do not have, for example, experience in high-level management.

By sticking to this type of criteria, boards of directors risk missing out on a whole group of people, she laments.

Ms. Bull spoke at a virtual roundtable hosted by the Empire Club of Canada, alongside Jenn Harper, Founder and CEO of Cheekbone Beauty Cosmetics and Tammy Brown, National Head of Industrial Markets at KPMG in Canada.

According to Bull, if changes are needed to improve Indigenous representation on boards, boards must also have access to training on equity and Indigenous issues.
