Technical control: why are you going to pay more?

spot_img

Since Saturday May 20, 2023, the technical inspection may cost you more. In question ? Adding new checks. The technical inspection is a compulsory examination for all motor vehicles over four years old, whose gross vehicle weight is less than 3.5 tons. This safety test is necessary to be able to drive on a road open to public traffic. Indeed, it makes it possible to identify the failures likely to affect the safety of motorists.

According to economie.gouv, the technical inspection is carried out in centers by approved inspectors. It must be carried out within six months from four years of seniority for a vehicle. Afterwards, the examination becomes periodic and must be renewed every 2 years.

The price of the technical control is freely determined by the professionals. In 2022, the price of the technical control was on average 78.52 euros, according to It interests me. However, this amount varies from one department or region to another. Control is, for example, more expensive in large cities and in the Île-de-France region. Other parameters can affect the price: the type of fuel used, the number of electronic elements of the vehicle… The costs vary from 48 to 90 euros.

This cost will go up. Since Saturday May 20, 2023, two new checks have been added to the long list of 133 technical control points, according to UFC-Que Choisir. What is it about ? How much is this going to cost you?

Since Saturday, May 20, 2023, the technical inspection has included a new criterion relating to energy consumption. This new verification follows the “On Board Fuel Consumption Monitoring” (OBFCM) regulations, imposed by the European Commission. Concretely, the mechanic will raise the ratio between the total fuel consumption and the kilometers traveled of the vehicles put into circulation since January 2021.

Only vehicles checked annually, such as taxis and ambulances, will have to comply with this new check. Individuals will only be affected from 2025. According to UFC-Que Choisir, they may also refuse to submit to this information statement. On the other hand, with regard to the second verification newly added to the technical control, the control will be compulsory. What is it about ?

From now on, the technical control includes a verification of the emergency call system, “ecall”, which is done via the European emergency call number: 112. Concretely, the mechanic must check that this functionality is up to standard for vehicles put into circulation since 2019. Individuals will only be concerned from 2025. Unlike the statement following the OBFCM regulations, this examination will be compulsory, reports UFC-Que Choisir.

Adding these two criteria to the technical control will increase its cost. Indeed, the mechanic will spend more time doing the check, introducing these two new points and putting them into practice. These additional minutes of control will surely be charged a few euros.
