Burglaries: what are the most targeted departments in 2023?

Summer is synonymous with sun, holidays and relaxation, but also, unfortunately, burglaries… This Tuesday, May 16, 2023, a study by the Ministerial Statistical Service for Internal Security (SSMSI), in collaboration with INSEE, presented the statistics of burglaries in France. “In 2022, in France excluding Mayotte, 211,400 burglaries or attempted burglaries of homes were recorded […], this represents an average of 5.8 offenses per 1,000 homes.”

According to the study, the number of burglaries has been increasing since the health crisis. Some departments have returned to, or even exceeded, their pre-crisis level. The SSMSI shows that certain factors increase the risk of being robbed. Which French people are most at risk?

“Burglaries are more frequent in the departments comprising the largest agglomerations”, reveals the Ministry of the Interior. “In general, the higher the standard of living of the inhabitants of a municipality, the higher the rate of burglaries and attempted burglaries there.” French people living in a dense urban area, made up of main residences and individual houses, are more often targeted.

“Living in a territory where the municipalities have high income differences increases the risk of burglary”. In other words, thefts are more numerous in cities where privileged neighborhoods rub shoulders with disadvantaged neighborhoods.

“Burglaries are also potentially more frequent, in the case where a municipality is located outside a mountain area or on the coast”. Finally, dwellings located near a national road are more frequently targeted by burglars than others.
