A hundred awards at the SOCAN Gala

Strong evening for the 33rd SOCAN Gala: after a year of absence, more than 100 trophies are awarded on Sunday, during an evening held at TOHU. Ginette Reno, Plume Latraverse and Paul Piché are among the artists honored for their career, during the ceremony hosted by the drag queen Barbada.

SOCAN is not your average gala: the winners know they will receive a hug when they show up. This year, the copyright management company is highlighting the exceptional trajectories of three key figures in Quebec song: Plume Latraverse receives the Prix Excellence, Paul Piché is inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and Ginette Reno receives the Prix Hommage.

The presentation of this distinction will be highlighted at the opening of the evening by singer Jeanick Fournier, winner of Canada’s Got Talent, who will perform Un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin, a song by Jean-Pierre Ferland. It is an emblematic title of Ginette Reno since she wore it on Mount Royal in June 1975.

The SOCAN Gala is a time for Canadian songwriters and composers to highlight their careers and successes. Each year, songs that have aired 25,000 times on the radio become SOCAN classics. Toune d’automne by Les Cowboys Fringants, La désise by Daniel Boucher, Point de mire by Ariane Moffatt, Because we come from far away by Corneille, On jase de toi by Noir Silence, Rêver Mieux by Daniel Bélanger and Balade à Toronto by Jean Leloup will be celebrated this year.

This gala held in private – it is a bit like the office party of the creators of Quebec music – is also that of the composers of music for the image. Cristobal Tapia de Veer, who wrote the music for the series The White Lotus, and Nathalie Bonin were among the creators honored.
