(Montreal) An anti-musical comedy “a bit punk”: that’s what the Cowboys Fringants promise for the show Pub Royal. The musical, produced by Les 7 Doigts de la Main, will be presented next fall in Montreal and Quebec City.

The musician and member of the group Jean-François Pauzé made the announcement on Wednesday morning at the Maisonneuve Theater of Place des Arts, alongside the 7 Doigts de la Main team.

Singers, dancers and acrobats will bring to life “the story of a guy who walks into a bar, and who will see his life take on a different meaning”, promises the director and author of the show’s booklet, Sébastien Soldevila.

The musical, in the form of a closed session, will feature fifteen songs from the Cowboys Fringants, including original compositions dedicated to the show. These new songs written by Jean-François Pauzé will make it possible to create links between the various existing pieces of the Cowboys.

“The idea behind this musical is to contextualize the songs of Les Cowboys Fringants, to try to either give them new meaning or expand the meaning they already had,” Soldevila said.

The idea for this collaboration between the Cowboys Frigants and Les 7 Doigts de la Main was born during the pandemic. “It wasn’t innate that it was going to be a musical,” said the band’s bassist, Jérôme Dupras. The idea of making an anti-musical “a bit punk, destroying the codes” is the formula that finally appealed to the group.

The first performance of Pub Royal will take place on November 22 at the Grand Théâtre de Québec. The show will be presented there until November 26. The musical will also be presented at the Maisonneuve Theater in Montreal from December 6 to December 23, before the troupe goes on tour across Europe.
