Speeding: the conditions for the end of the point withdrawal

If you have ever faced a point deduction for a minor speeding violation, this will soon no longer be the case. Indeed, on April 19, 2023, Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior, announced the end of this withdrawal system on January 1, 2024. In France, the National Interministerial Observatory for Road Safety has nearly 15.1 million speeding in 2021. More so, 14 million points were taken away for various infractions.

Nevertheless, of the number of speeding violations recorded, 94.7% of them correspond to an overrun of less than 20 km/h. Moreover, the Ministry of the Interior revealed that 58% of verbalized excesses are less than 5km / h in France. After this observation, associations including “40 million consumers” had denounced an unfair verbalization policy. But then, the end of the point deduction would relate to what type of speeding? On what terms?

It was in a letter addressed to the senator of the Les Républicains party, Françoise Dumont, that the Minister of the Interior mentioned this decision. The latter had also sent a letter to Gérald Darmanin wondering about the number of speeding less than 10 km / h. Thus, Nice-Matin, published the letter indicating that only will be concerned the overruns lower than 5 km/h.

Gérald Darmanin nevertheless specifies that “it will not be a question of decriminalizing these offenses which will remain punishable by a fine”. A fine will therefore always be applied in the event of an infraction, but no points will be deducted from the licence. The latter adds that it is a question of “introducing administrative indulgence with regard to these shortcomings which are more a matter of lack of attention than of the deliberate desire to free oneself from the rule”.
