The largest pork processor in Quebec, Olymel, announced Friday morning the closure of one of its four Quebec slaughterhouses, that of Vallée-Jonction, in Chaudière-Appalaches. Nearly 1,000 workers will be affected.

The factory’s evening shift will end on September 15. The complete closure is scheduled for December 22.

“This decision was made necessary in order to stop the losses in the fresh pork sector, which have amounted to more than $400 million over the past 2 years and threaten the sustainability of the entire company,” Olymel said in a press release. .

The plant employed precisely 994 people, including 911 unionized workers.

The company explains that it chose Vallée-Jonction after an analysis process.

“The conclusions of this process have made clear the disadvantages of the Vallée-Jonction plant due to the steady decline in the available workforce and the state of the facilities which would require the injection of tens of millions upgrade dollars,” she said in the same statement.
