The Quebec Opera Festival has announced the premiere of an opera by Christian Thomas adapted from Michel Tremblay’s play Messe solennelle pour un plein lune d’été.
We announce a participation of Les Violons du Roy, a staging by Alain Zouvi and a scenography by Jean Bard.
The premiere of the opera, whose distribution will be 100% Quebec, will take place at the Raoul-Jobin hall of the Palais-Montcalm on July 29, followed by two performances.
If Messe solennelle pour une plein lune d’été is a little-known piece from the work of Michel Tremblay, the Festival de l’Opéra de Québec underlines how much it lends itself to opera with characters who speak of love and of disenchantment by speaking from their balconies while “admiring the hot August moon”.
Also on the program at the 12th Quebec Opera Festival, Roméo et Juliette: the freshness of a summer night wrapped in passion and absolute love with tenor Thomas Bettinger and soprano Hélène Carpentier in a staging by Pierre-Emmanuel Rousseau and musical direction provided by Laurent Campellone.
The public will also be able to see what is advertised as “a reading” of La Fille sans régiment by Donizetti.
The festival runs from July 23 to August 2.
