According to an INSEE study published on March 16, 2023, since the health crisis and the development of teleworking, we have seen more departures from large cities. The successive confinements would have changed the relationship of households to their place of residence, pushing them to move.
To carry out this study, INSEE used various indicators, in particular data from the final change of address recorded by La Poste or the statistical directory of road vehicles which lists car owners and their place of residence ( RSVERO).
According to these indicators, city dwellers are leaving large cities and, in particular, the Paris region. Indeed, “the poles of the large metropolises and the Paris area, already in deficit before the pandemic compared to their crowns, are even more so after 2020.” But where do the townspeople go?
The migratory movements observed using data from La Poste show that medium-sized and small towns are particularly attractive. Cities with less than 200,000 inhabitants benefited from excess flows before 2020 and their input-output ratio has continued to increase since then.
According to Le Parisien, households under 40 from Île-de-France prefer Lyon, Toulouse and Nantes. While those over 60 prefer coastal towns such as Nice or La Rochelle.
