Erling Haaland scores five goals to equal Champions League record

(Manchester) Erling Haaland equaled a Champions League record with a five-goal performance on Tuesday and propelled Manchester City to the quarter-finals of continental competition with a 7-0 victory.

The Norway international became the fastest player to reach 30 goals in his career when he put the English champions ahead 2-0 against RB Leipzig in the second leg of their Round of 16 showdown.

Aged 22 years and 236 days, Haaland is also the youngest player to reach that milestone, smashing the mark of Kylian Mbappé, who was 22 years and 352 days old when he scored his 30th Champions League goal.

However, Haaland, who opened the scoring with a 22nd-minute penalty, was just getting started with his brace. He completed his hat-trick before halftime, then came back on the charge in the 54th and 57th minutes of play.

Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano are the only other players to score five goals in a Champions League game.

Haaland was substituted after 63 minutes, with Manchester City leading 6-0. Man City eventually won the home-and-away series on aggregate 8-1.

Inter Milan reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in more than a decade thanks to a 0-0 draw that gave them a 1-0 victory on aggregate against the FC Porto.

The Portuguese club came close to scoring late in the game, which would have forced the presentation of extra time. Their players reached the post and the crossbar within minutes during stoppage time.

Chances to score were fairly scarce at the Estadio do Dragao and Inter did what was necessary to confirm their ticket to the next stage. The Italian club will advance to the quarter-finals for the first time since being eliminated in the group stage as defending champions in 2011.

Romelu Lukaku had scored the goal that made the difference at San Siro in the first set.
