Burglaries after Christmas: 3 tips to avoid being targeted

Christmas is over, but the holidays are not over yet. For burglars, on the other hand, the time is certainly not to rest since it is one of the times of the year when they are the most active. Indeed, according to a survey unveiled by BPCE Assurances, in 2021, a 46% increase in burglaries was thus observed during Christmas week.

It is well known that New Year’s Eve is conducive to this kind of malicious acts and there are several precautions to take if you are absent. But during the following week, there are other clues to watch out for if you don’t want to be the target of a break-in.

Thus, it is necessary to remain vigilant about the photos that are posted on social networks after the holidays. “We have more and more policyholders who post photos, but the photos indicate an absence and therefore an indication of the homes to be visited”, indicates Julien Terrier-Duraisin, deputy general manager of BPCE Assurances at Europe 1.

During the holidays, it is important not to suggest that you are away from home on social networks, as this is an indication that could be valuable for thieves. But that’s not all, because, after Christmas, many people post photos of their best gifts to show them to those around them, but this is also to be avoided.

“Publish photos of gifts of a certain importance on the networks, like a beautiful watch, arouses covetousness. Social networks must be prohibited on this subject, because all the faults are good to take for the burglars”, explains the insurer to our colleagues.

Likewise, it is important to be careful when taking out the trash after Christmas. Leaving a box or box of valuables in evidence in front of your home could encourage burglars to choose this home.
