A shower of fines. In 2021, motorists received a very large number of reports in mailboxes, 39.53 million precisely, according to figures from Challenges magazine. Figures that could have been much higher without the travel restrictions linked to health measures.

In its annual report cited by our colleagues, the National Agency for the Automated Processing of Offenses (ANTAI) reports an increase in the number of offense files from automated control radars of 19% in 2021 compared to 2020, to reach 22.1 million. This data is close to the historic levels reached in 2017 and 2018.

“The number of speed cameras has also increased. Not only has the equipment damaged in 2018 and 2019 during the Yellow Vests protest movement been repaired, but new machines have appeared”, notes the weekly.

In short, there are nearly 200 more speed cameras between December 2020 and December 2021, for a total of 4,422 automatic speed cameras… That is a volume “equivalent to that of the end of 2017 (4,446 automatic speed cameras deployed)”, underlines the ‘ANTAI. As a reminder, the agency is responsible for receiving and processing offenses detected by speed cameras of all types.
