Wasps: 9 very bad reflexes when trying to destroy the nest

They have enough to spin the bumblebee. This summer, wasps and hornets are out, due to a particularly mild winter and early heat during spring. Some, as is the case with the Asian hornet, can also prove to be particularly aggressive in addition to representing a real scourge for beekeepers. “You just have to get a little closer to the nest and they attack”, confirms an employee of the extermination company ADN 41, interviewed by the regional daily La Nouvelle République. It is also important to remember that some species tend to build several nests, some of which are only intended to accommodate future founding queens. Not destroying them means taking the risk of a new invasion the following year.

Be careful, however, continues the daily: certain species of wasps and hornets should ideally not be killed. This is the case of insect races native to Europe, we can read. “They are useful, they should not be eliminated systematically but only when they present a danger”, indicates one of the experts interviewed by our colleagues. However, if you are facing a veritable rush of wasps, it may be tempting to get rid of the nest on your own. Be careful, in this case, not to commit any of the 9 errors listed at the conclusion of this article.

In many respects, informs the specialized site Moustique.be, wasps constitute a “benefit for the ecosystem”. They clean the environment and protect it from mosquitoes, flies and aphids.

“A wasp can kill 1.5 insects every hour and a nest therefore kills 80,000 insects in 24 hours. born and that must therefore be fed. We can quite imagine 5,000 insects being killed per hour by a colony of wasps”, thus indicates François Verheggen, entomologist at the University of Liège, who also recalls that wasps are not usually not numerous enough to harm the overall population of their prey. They also have a pollinating role.
