Heat wave: why this new heat wave promises to be intense

As expected, just days after the end of a third heat wave, a fourth wave will hit France from this Monday, August 8, reports BFMTV. This heat wave could prove to be more intense than the previous one, with temperatures exceeding 35°C in many cities and over several days. Already, Gard and Vaucluse are on heatwave orange vigilance.

In Bordeaux (Gironde), for example, Météo-France already recorded 32°C this Monday at midday. Temperatures are then expected to continue to rise to 38°C on Friday. Same observation in Paris, where the mercury will gradually rise from 30°C to 35°C between this Monday and Saturday. In some municipalities, temperatures will even reach 40 °C during certain peaks.

The nights will also be warm, with temperatures between 22 and 25 °C in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux and Rennes. Lows between 19 and 21°C are nevertheless expected in the early morning in these four cities throughout the week.

This longer-lasting heat peak than the previous ones can be explained from a meteorological point of view by particularly favorable climatic conditions. A powerful anticyclone has indeed settled over the British Isles, resulting in a dry and hot climate in France. In addition, hot air from the Sahara also rises towards France through Portugal.

As a result, this heat wave could aggravate the drought that is currently affecting the country, and which is responsible for many fires. On Friday August 5, a storm came to touch dry vegetation, for example, caused a major fire in the Chartreuse massif near Grenoble (Isère). As of Saturday, the end of this fourth heat wave should also result in thunderstorms and rain, first in the southern part of the country, then throughout the territory on Sunday.
