Staff shortage: all the services you could be deprived of this summer

Could “shortage” be the word of the year? For months, the French have been worried at all levels. In the supermarket, the oil and mustard shelves are empty. In schools, classes could lack teachers at the start of the school year. And in your favorite vacation spots, a new shortage threatens your holidays: the lack of staff.

Lately, restaurateurs are facing an incredible difficulty in terms of recruitment. Seasonal workers no longer come knocking at their door. In recreation centers and colonies, it is the same problem. Finally, at airports, there are also concerns about a lack of ground staff.

In short, the summer of 2022 promises to be complicated for tourism professionals in France.

Every summer, an average of 600,000 seasonal workers must be recruited by the sector, including 300,000 in the hotel and catering industry alone, specifies the newspaper Le Parisien.

Positions which, a few weeks before the summer holidays, are far from all being filled.

So, to cope and try to reverse the trend, merchants and restaurateurs are competing with tricks to attract employees, offering attractive salaries and many benefits.

But it would seem that young people, traditionally numerous to put on an apron or a whistle in July or August, are no longer really interested in these positions, where arduousness often rhymes with precariousness. “We see that young people do not want a directive management and a stressed atmosphere”, relates Émilie Le Goff, CEO of Troops, which offers software for temp agencies, in the columns of Le Parisien.

The situation could have serious consequences on the comfort and habits of holidaymakers this summer. Closed restaurants, crowded airports… Discover in our slideshow what your summer could look like due to a staff shortage.
