At 11:53 p.m., shots were fired at the Melody Hookah Lounge, Main Street, Blacksburg, Virginia. The lounge is less than one mile from Virginia Tech’s campus.

According to the Blacksburg Police Department, five people were shot in total. One victim died, and four others were taken to local hospitals.

“The extent of the injuries sustained by those who were taken to hospital is not known at this time,” said police in a news statement.

According to police, the case is currently under homicide investigation. Multiple law enforcement agencies are supporting.

Tim Sands, President of Virginia Tech, stated in a statementearly on Saturday that one among the injured was a student.

Sands stated, “Our condolences go to the family members and friends of the deceased” and that she extended her support to those who were hurt.

The identities of the victims are not known.

At 11:59 pm, the university issued an alert about a gun-wielding person in the area. The campus was placed under lockdown and officials asked students to remain inside. The campus was declared secure by 3:18 a.m.
