History of the Cup Roma

His birth reflected the hospitality that the R. C. M. A.-R. S. C. always provides to its visitors. A cordial reception that they were able to verify, in those early years of the last century (1903), the gentlemen of the Count of Cartagena and José Quiñones de León, who were anchored his yacht ‘Gitana’ in the port are recorded. Such was his gratitude for the good treatment he received, which, in return, decided to create a race in tribute to all the sailors of the Club, whose first edition was held the following year. The Count of Cartagena and José Quiñones gave the race the name of his yacht, and thus was born the Copa Gypsy, a pioneer of the international races in our country.

now 116 years old, the spaniard Victoriano López Doriga became a partner in the Sporting to be able to participate in a regatta. And sail with your ship ‘Butterfly’, he managed to win it. At that already distant year of 1904, I was unaware that his name would go down in history as the first winner of the Cup Gypsy. After these 116 years, and has become the race’s oldest Real Club Marítimo Abra-Real Sporting Club, remains one of the trophies most prized of this entity. By then, the ships were paid five pesetas per enrollment in each of the five tests comprising the Cup Gypsy. After Lopez Doriga, was Julio Arteche which, in 1905, inscribed his name on the trophy. Then they did the Count of Zubiría, and the lords of Arteche. Until, in 1911, the winners of the Copa Gypsy saw as the victory of Alfonso XIII, who won this year aboard the ‘Giralda II’.
