5G frequencies: the Federal government is pushing for fast Internet in the country

The German Federal network Agency wants an almost full network coverage for all municipalities in Germany with the new mobile radio standard 5G. “At least 98 percent of the households per province will be supplied by the end of 2022,” reads the final draft of the authority for the auction of the 5G frequencies. A transmission speed of 100 megabits per second should be ensured. All of the highways, the main highways and the main rail routes to achieve this quality of care.

The Federal network Agency specifies the design of the procurement rules, to auction the frequencies in the spring of 2019 to the mobile service provider. The policy demands for a comprehensive 5G cover, so even in remote areas. The network operators do not think that makes sense, since there was hardly a need for ultra-fast mobile radio, in your view, would be sufficient for this 4G.

Between the government and the network operators, there is controversy about the introduction of new mobile radio standards. In a letter to Federal Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU), the threatening Manager of the German Telekom, Vodafone and Telefónica with complaints and warn of an “extensive expansion of supply requirements”. Thus the duty is meant, also all the rural regions to one hundred per cent with the expensive 5G masts to cover.

“Economic burden in the context of”

“We have revised our original design in the light of a number of opinions”, said the President of the Federal network Agency, Jochen Homann. You have to keep in view, what was “technically, economically and legally possible”. The network operator could, for example, the ability to co-operate more and to let each other care credit. “So the economic burden for the company can be kept in the frame,” said Homann.

The Federal network Agency specifies the requirements for the traffic routes, however, not explicitly, that the 5G technology needs to be used. Rather, it is called the minimum transfer rates. On motorways, Federal roads and ICE routes, the 100 megabits per second, on smaller streets and less-used train routes 50 megabits per second. Thus, the network operator could use sometimes on 4G masts in order to meet the conditions.
