(Brampton) Caroline Harvey scored twice, Abby Roque added a goal and three assists and the United States beat Switzerland 9-1 in a Group A match at the World Women’s Hockey Championship on Friday.

Abbey Murphy set a record for the fastest net early in tournament history when she hit the target seven seconds into the game. She added two assists. Cayla Barnes also had a goal and two assists.

Rebecca Gilmore, Gabrielle Hughes, Hannah Bilka and Amanda Kessel scored the other goals for the United States, which led 4-0 after the first period and 6-0 after two periods. Goaltender Nicole Hensley blocked 12 shots.

Rahel Enzler denied Hensley a shutout by scoring Switzerland’s only goal at 10:27 of the third period.

Goaltender Saskia Maurer had a busy game as she faced 54 pucks.

The team from the United States is trying to forget the silver medals it had to settle for in the last two editions of the World Championship following defeats against Canada, each time in the final.

The Americans opened the tournament by defeating Japan 7-1 on Wednesday. They will face the Czech Republic on Sunday.

On Friday evening, Canada will cross swords with the Czech Republic. The Canadians got the competition off to a good start on Wednesday with a 4-0 win over Switzerland on Wednesday night.

In the afternoon, in a duel of group B, Finland gives battle to Germany. Finland crushed France 14-1 to open the tournament on Wednesday, while the Germans edged Sweden 6-2 on Thursday.
