Women’s World Championship | Canada beat USA 4-3 in shootout

(Brampton) Jamie Lee Rattray scored the game-winning goal in the ninth round of the penalty shootout as Canada beat the United States 4-3 in the two teams’ final game in the preliminary round of the Women’s World Hockey Championship , Monday.

The two teams, who finished first and second in Group A, now turn their attention to their quarter-final match on Thursday.

Sarah Fillier, who also had an assist, Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey scored Canada’s goals; Ann-Renée Desbiens got the win in net.

Hannah Bilka, with a goal and an assist, Hilary Knight and Amanda Kessel scored for the Americans. Aerin Frankel suffered the loss.

Canada led 3-1 with 2:27 left in the game after Stacey scored in an empty net.

But the Americans had not said their last word.

Knight scored on a rebound with 39 seconds left in regulation time and Kessel then tied the game by scoring with 3.4 seconds on the clock.

Canada could not take advantage of a penalty to Knight in overtime, before it was frustrated by Desbiens on a breakaway shortly after.
