A woman complains about being invited to a wedding and then having to pay for the meal herself without warning.

“I was invited to a wedding, the bride and groom were more like good acquaintances than friends,” a woman begins her story on Reddit. Nevertheless, she decided to accept the invitation via WhatsApp. After the ceremony, there was to be a party and a meal.

“I was quite surprised when I heard that they had reserved a table and invited the less than ten guests to join them if they wanted.” The woman thought that was very kind and went along. “The groom had ordered appetizers for everyone and at some point I gave them the cash gift that I would have given them anyway.”

After dinner, the big surprise. “The groom’s mother came up to him. I didn’t hear the question she asked, but his answer was: ‘Everyone for what they had.’ That sounded very much like I was supposed to pay for my own meal, including coffee and soft drink,” she writes on Reddit.

When it was time to leave, she asked if we had to pay for ourselves. “The groom’s mother said yes.” When I paid, she pointed out that I also had to pay for the starter that the groom had ordered. With tips, that came to 33 euros. Actually, not even that expensive. It was a coincidence that I had any money with me at all, which is not guaranteed at a wedding.”

After this incident, the woman vented her anger on Reddit: “If they had said beforehand that you have to pay yourself, it would have been fine.”

Many users on Reddit agree. “It’s not common, but it’s not wrong, not to give a meal after the wedding. The couple’s mistake is that they didn’t tell you that you would have to pay for the meal. This information should have been given before the wedding day,” one person writes.

Others are less relaxed about the matter. “I would have refused to pay and withdrawn the gift. They don’t deserve to do such a stupid thing without informing anyone first.” Another agrees: “You should have just left. It is their duty to offer a meal.”

On the discussion platform Reddit, another guest recently shared an unusual wedding experience that sparked considerable controversy. The person concerned was invited to a wedding reception on New Year’s Eve where, despite a formal invitation and expected formal attire, neither food nor alcoholic beverages were offered.
