(NYC) Winnipeg Jets defenseman Neal Pionk was fined US$5,000 on Wednesday for cross-checking Minnesota Wild forward Marcus Johansson.

The incident happened 19:10 into the third period of Tuesday night’s game between the two teams, when Pionk cross-checked Johansson near the ramp. Johansson collapsed on the rink, visibly in pain, and was slow to get up afterwards.

Pionk received a major penalty for his gesture.

The fine is $5,000, the maximum amount under the NHL collective agreement, and will be paid into the NHL Players’ Emergency Relief Fund.

The Jets defeated the Wild 3-1 and secured their ticket to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Pionk, 27, has scored 10 goals and 22 assists in 81 games this season.
