Do you have more cows than neighbors in your department? Jules Grandin, journalist and cartographer, published several infographics that quickly became popular on social networks. The columnist of the Quotidien show shared on Twitter a map of France of the departments which had more cows, pigs, sheep or goats than inhabitants in 2019. Is this the case for you? In our slideshow below, discover the 13 departments that have more cattle than humans.
Elsewhere in France, there are, to a lesser extent, departments where there are more pigs than inhabitants. This is the case in Finistère, Morbihan, Côtes-d’Armor, Ille-et-Vilaine and Mayenne. As for sheep, they are in the majority in some departments in the south of the country, namely: Lot, Aveyron, Lozère, Hautes-Alpes and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Goats, for their part, are outnumbered everywhere in France.
On the other hand, big disappointment on the side of the goats 🙁 pic.twitter.com/ZbL1R74qUz

While amusing at first glance, these cards also have a story. In the columns of the Huffington Post, card enthusiast Jules Grandin explains: “This may seem anecdotal, but it says two things: a certain rurality and a form of geographical specialization of breeding in France (…) These maps show above all a France against the current of urbanized France”.
