Weather: a storm without rain, what is it?

It is an infrequent meteorological phenomenon in France. What causes it is precipitation, in very hot air, explains the media L’union. Called “Heat-Burst” or “heat stroke”, this event does not cause downpours.

On the other hand, it causes a sudden rise in temperature. The rain evaporates before it can touch the ground. Thus, it cools the air which becomes denser. The latter descends towards the earth, which dries up and heats up, by compression.

In other words, this phenomenon is more likely to occur when high temperatures are forecast, such as this episode of heat wave that France is currently going through. Currently, there are 26 departments on orange alert:

In 56 departments, a yellow storm vigilance has been put in place by Météo France, in its weather report of August 4, 2022, from 10 a.m. To spot their arrival, look for these signs:

The sky darkens very quickly. For voluminous thunderstorms, the sky can become “black pitch”, according to the site. Indeed, the thicker the clouds, the darker the sky will be.

The wind strengthens and can turn into a gust. Generally, these gusts of wind are followed by heavy rain.

Finally, if you are in the mountains, you will be able to observe “glows at the ends of sharp objects” or hear diffuse buzzing, indicating the arrival of lightning, according to the site.
