(Palm Harbor) Taylor Moore had a few opportunistic shots and turned in a 67 (under 4) to win the Valspar Championship on Sunday.
Moore avoided mistakes that cost Jordan Spieth (70) and Adam Schenk (70) his ticket to the Masters Tournament, which takes place next month.
The 29-year-old, and in his second year on the PGA Tour, Moore was in the practice area of the Copperhead course to prepare for a possible overtime.
Spieth was tied for first when he hit the water on the 16th hole. He took a bogey. On the 17th flag, he put the ball six feet from the hole, but missed his putt for a birdie.
Schenk had a heartbreaking end to the round. He wedged a long putt from 70 feet to birdie the 12th hole and saved two tough pars at the 16th and 17th flags to stay tied.
On the 18th hole, he hit his tee shot to the left of the fairway. In a precarious situation, Schenk putt from a distance of 40 feet for par to force an overtime, but to no avail.
Moore won the tournament with a cumulative score of minus 10, one shot better than Schenk. Tommy Fleetwood (70) and Spieth tied for third, at 8 under.
Thanks to his win, Moore is now $1.458 million richer and moved up to ninth in the FedEx Cup standings. In addition to his presence at the Masters Tournament, he will be able to participate in the PGA Championship.
The only Canadian to make the weekend rounds, Nick Taylor shot 70 and finished the event tied for 10th.
