United States of America: last death penalty for this year

In the United States was carried out on Thursday evening, the last death penalty in this year. The 55-year-old Jose Jiminez was executed in the prison of Starke in the state of Florida with a poison syringe. Around 21.48 hours (local time, 03.48 PM CET) he was declared dead. Overall, were enforced in the United States this year, 25 death sentences.

Jiminez was convicted in 1994 for the murder of a neighbor to death. The lawyers of the Condemned had tried again and again to obtain a suspension of judgment. They referred, among other things, to the fact that Jiminez’ drug addiction had not been sufficiently taken into account. Several times, the execution of the death sentence has been postponed.

Despite the 25 fully stretched out, death in this year, the death penalty is a judge in the United States on the retreat. The 25 executions in the year 2018, are a historically low level. Meanwhile, 20 States have abolished the death penalty, of the 30, only eight have made this year.

the number of courts imposed the death penalty drops dramatically. 42 death sentences were imposed this year, 1996, there were still 315.
