The principal of a Wisconsin elementary school has forbidden its first graders from singing Rainbowland by Miley Cyrus and Dolly Parton at a concert because it might be a “controversial” song.
The children had been rehearsing their number for three days when the news broke, reports the Wall Street Journal. In a statement, the Waukesha District School Board said the artwork “may violate school board policy.” In 2021, that same district banned teachers from hanging Black Lives Matter posters.
Released in 2017 on Miley Cyrus’ Younger Now album, the track Rainbowland expresses the wish that one day, the earth would be “a paradise where we would be free to be exactly who we are”. The rainbow flag symbolizing LGBTQ pride, which represents diversity.
